Tehachapi Mountain Glow
Often in the evening just around the time of sunset the Tehachapi Mountains appear to come alive. The peaks that face the setting sun become bathed in a reddish gold. The foreground of the entrance of the ranch is in shadow and and a hush seems to fall over the land and gently whisper “The end of a perfect day”

Outcropping in the Forest; Tehachapi Mountains
The mountains of Tehachapi are full of beauty and wonders such as this oak tree that was probably struck by lightning but has survived and struggles back to life. It is surrounded by a forest of conifer trees towered over by a great outcropping of pre-Cretaceous metasedimentary rocks. The verdant greens of the many different species of pines and oaks mingle together to form a joyous symphony of color.

Redolence of Spring, Tehachapi Highlands
Happening upon this huge and very fragrant lilac in full bloom in the upper reaches of the Tehachapi hills--the area presenting the perfect climate for such a beloved shrub--an old wagon entangled underneath, I thought of the co-existence of both the wildness and refinement that can be found in this beautiful area of California.

Arroyo Lupine - Cummings Valley, CA
The inspiration for the painting is twofold - my interest in botanical prints and the fact that I often see Arroyo Lupine with the backdrop of the Cummings Valley on the road to my house. Historically, botanical prints showed the foliage and flower of a plant in the foreground with a distant view of the terrain typical of that in which the plant grows. Botanical prints usually omit the middle ground of a scene.

Hidden Oaks; Tehachapi, CA
This painting depicts a view of Oak Flat near my home located between Stallion Springs and Bear Valley. It is one of my favorite views in the Tehachapi area and one that I enjoy on morning walks. I am particularly interested in the perspective provided by the even distribution of the large valley oaks across the pasture.

Black Stallion
Wild horses and the morning light were inspirational. The stallions were busy this hour of the day making sure their mares were behaving. If one of the mares wondered off he pranced around her making sure she came back to his herd. Sometimes she listened to him…and sometimes she wouldn’t.

Tehachapi Treasure
I was so taken with the Wild Horses of Oak Creek that I knew I would have to do a very special painting of the feeling I had on this very special day. This stallion kept me mesmerized all day. He was full of spirit and in beautiful shape, as he ran around the meadow with the sun glistening off his beautiful coat. He picked fights with the other horses just to let them know he was in charge. So here he is in all his glory!

Tehachapi Charm
A funny story on this unique house in Tehachapi. I got out of the car to get a closer look to decide if I was going to paint this beauty. Man across the street was staring at me so I said, "I'm an artist here for the paint out, and I was thinking of painting this house". With a puzzled look he said "I think they just painted it a little while back". Well how could I not paint it with a story like that.

Tehachapi Valley View
Our first night of the Paint Out we were wined and dined at the beautiful Dorner Family Winery tucked back up in the hills from Cummings Valley. When I saw these beautiful Yellow and Purple Iris as you entered the property, I had a hunch they may end up in one of my paintings. When I went back to paint them, I noticed a sign "Rattlesnake Habitat", oh boy was I jumpy just waiting for one to pass through. After painting and enjoying a glass of wine at the Winery to calm my nerves, I asked the lady serving about the snakes. She said she had never seen one, but they have to put the signs up. "sigh of relief”

The Vineyard at Willow Springs
Willow Springs is off the main road to Tehachapi. I was intrigued by the careful preservation of historical buildings such as the saloon, bordello and various outbuildings. This contrasted with the vineyard and other modern business operations which are scattered between the historical buildings. I felt the abandoned house on the ridge and the rusting tractors contrasted with the vineyard to express the changes this area has adapted to over time.

Old Compadres
This vintage truck and its companion agave are on the road to the Cesar Chavez monument in Keene. They are nestled together like two old friends leaning on a bar and telling stories. As an artist, I was struck by the close colors of the agave and the faded paint on the truck.

Fading Riches, Amalie Silver Mine
I came across this decaying building on the roadside by the Amalie silver mine, in Caliente Canyon. From my research, it appears this building might have been the company store for the mine employees. It is a great location for painting outdoors, as there are about 6 buildings still standing, with good views from multiple locations. The challenge of painting outdoors was the 30 mile an hour wind, which blew down our umbrellas and made the roof of the crushing shed bang like it was about to tear off.

Dreyer's View
The inspiration for this work came from looking over the Dreyer's lush backyard onto the neighbors dry and dusty property, the contrast between the lush grounds where a party was going on and the shadows being cast onto dry grasses was just too inviting.

Heading for the Tehachapi Loop
The overpass without a train or even just part of a train would have been blasphemy. I know train enthusiasts would have preferred fewer trees and more train but the landscape is what I do. This loop is world famous and I'm paying tribute to it by dominating the middle of the painting with what people come to see; now the trees, the dark clouds, the road leading the eye into the painting were included only to support the train and the overpass.

In the Hills Above Keene
The contrast between the different types of green trees and bushes, some cool greens others a warm yellow green and blue greens as well, bushes some blooming with yellow/green blossoms, and lots of branches and dead material which turns a blue-lavender magenta, and in the middle of it all is a red house and barn. How many artists do you know who would turn down an opportunity to make this visual eye candy into a painting?

From Days of Ore
Exploring the roads less traveled is a favorite pastime of mine because one often discovers a relic of the past which stirs up curiosity and wonder. This little gem of a scene with the steep canyon slopes strewn with oak trees and focusing on the remains of one of several buildings which comprised the Amalie Silver Mine made me wonder what purpose this building served and what tales the walls could tell if they could speak.

"Bear Valley Springs Sycamore Canyon"
10x20 Oil on linen mounted on panel
The desert is beautiful with many personalities, depending on the area. Bear Valley Springs, near Tehachapi, although desert, in mid-May still had vestiges of Spring in the shaded canyons with wild flowers everywhere. It was an awe inspiring sight, hiking along the horse trail in Sycamore Canyon, beauty everywhere. Irish green plants, colorful flowers, artfully twisted trees, vistas of mountains in the distance. The sun played hide and seek among the trees, with cool shadows cast along the trail and bright patches lit up, spotlighting the abundant foliage.

Leisurely Morning
It’s not often one sees wild horses up close and in person. This herd was a higher quality than typical mustangs, with their Morgan breed ancestry. We walked among the horses as they were not shy around us due to the alfalfa feeding program. First the horses concentrated on eating, then broke off into ever changing groups. Babies dashed around playing, then flopped next to their mommas for rest before getting up and dashing again. This mare had her fill of alfalfa, then enjoyed grass while her foal rested. Distant horses munched away while a young “buck” went to cause mischief. The beautiful Oak Canyon vistas made for a relaxing time among the families of 7 stallions each with their own mares to defend from foes and younger stallions alike.

Mustang Momma
In the animal kingdom a mother’s love is universal. In most cases it is an inbred trait that mothers want to take care of their offspring and give them the best start possible in life. It is touching to watch a mare keeping her foal fed and protected. There is a gentleness in the connection between mother and child.

Springtime, Hidden Oaks
Inspired from a friend’s ranch in Hidden Oaks, Tehachapi. The lush spring green surprised me, considering that there had been very little rain. It was a challenge to paint all the greens, considering that I see very little green where I live in the desert!

This place was something I wanted to paint from the very minute I saw it. I was particularly drawn to the architectural features such as the arches and the terraced gardens. I loved how the sun lite the building and how the reflected light became more lovely as the afternoon progressed.

Morning at Oak Creek Canyon
The trees in “Morning at Oak Creek Canyon” were blocked in on site, then finished using photos I took. The privilege of viewing the wild horses there was inspirational in so many ways, and I knew I wanted to paint them. I realized, however, that to make the composition work, I could not attempt to put all the horses in a miniature painting, so I chose just two.

Tehachapi Oaks
When I think of Tehachapi, I think of thousands of oak trees, each one unique, spread out across wide open spaces. My goal for this painting was to honor the oak trees and create the feeling of open space. In addition to being inspired by this sun-struck pair, I was attracted to the pale cream colored grass and subtle pastel colors as the fields progressed and retreated to the far blue rolling hills.

The Shade Seekers
When I was a kid, I loved visiting my grandmother's dairy farm. The cows all had names and were quite docile, so we would hang out with them in the pasture for hours at a time (we were never allowed near the bulls). For this painting I wanted to capture the lazy, hazy gathering of cattle as they slowly converge and lay down in the shade on a hot summer day. I was particularly attracted to the silhouettes of the dark shapes of the cattle and tree trunks against the lit ground beyond.

Three Peaks
This view, from the Keane Cafe parking lot, stopped me in my tracks. The three distinct peaks of this iconic mountain create wonderful blue shadows at the end of the day -- which, of course, made my job of painting it a lot of fun!

Send A Message To My Heart
I caught sunset on this roving hillside at just the right time in my small plein air I'd painted onsite. When I'd thought I'd lost all my light, a striking line of light charged through the hillside, slicing through grass and trees like a lightning bolt! It lasted only a brief time, and out it went. I'd considered not painting in the telephone pole, until the right title summed up the scene for me. "Send a Message to my Heart", sung by Dwight Yoakam and Patty Loveless summed it up just right. This is a large painting done from my small plein air and my own reference.

Sanctuary
While driving through Tehachapi to find just the right placet to paint, I came upon an idyllic spot that literally called to me. Songbirds were singing to their mates. A small creek, fed by the lake in Stallion Springs, tucked away and nestled in reeds, provided a safe place to court. The "real" title is "Songbird Sanctuary", but I thought that in fact, it's a sanctuary for all.

The great Tehachapi Loop delights train buffs and artists alike. The adjacent hillsides inspired me to capture the work of nature that surrounds this great engineering marvel. I am inspired by clouds and how they affect the landscape. Whether it is a summer monsoon thunderstorm or an approaching cold front, I get excited. This was all about the backlit oak tree and not the boat, although I do like painting boats too. Camellias
For centuries the Camellia has served as a symbol of strength during times of adversity. Depending on the color of the flower, varying cultures have used it as a symbol of love, passion, longing, and admiration. In Victorian times, to send someone a pink Camellia meant that you missed and longed to see them. This piece is a love letter of sorts to all those I admire and longed to see during this past unprecedented year.

Night of the Sugar Moon
The sugar moon tends to be the name given to the full moon right after winter's thaw. For us, it fell in March right when we were given orders to stay safe during the pandemic. I found comfort staring at the glow of the oncoming sugar moon. At this time of year sap begins to leak from wrinkles in the maple tree bark where it is collected and transformed into the sweet delicacy that is usually stored in a maple syrup jug pot just like the vintage one represented in this painting.

Tehachapi Oaks
I was once told that the spotted arrangement of the oak trees along the slopes of Tehachapi was a result of the fires started by the coal embers of passing steam engine trains. The resulting tree pattern, together with the sprinkling of various rock formations, give a unique look that defines the Tehachapi landscape. I was careful to accurately represent the highly contorted trunks with gnarled branches. The distance observed in the landscape is realized with a subtle change in the dominate green hues of the these oak trees to a cooler blue.

A Long Day
A hazy, late afternoon light was enhanced by the dust kicked up by the horse hoofs as the cowboy passes by with empty saddles on tired
horses. This iconic scene was influenced by my memory of those old western movies I had seen where the rider was returning back to the ranch after a long day on the range.
